Former US Secretary of Commerce Visits Taichi Lake for the Launch of its Cultural Industry Program – Kung Fu Park

SHIYAN CITY, Hubei Province - Wudang Taichi Lake is famous for its gorgeous mountains and lake, as well as its unique cultural attractions, which have fascinated countless visitors from all over the world.

On September 16, 2012, former Secretary of Commerce and US Trade Representative, Michael “Mickey” Kantor, , traveled to the Wudang Mountains and Taichi Lake area to meet with Zhou Ji, the Party Secretary of Shiyan City, and discuss the development of the region as a cultural tourism destination. Traveling with Mr. Kantor were Thomas McLain, a trustee of the Asia Society and the Chair of the Asia Society of Southern California, Jack Chen, Founder & CEO of Transworld Capital Group, and Yang Qingshan, Chairman of Taichi Lake Group.

Zhou Ji, Secretary of Shiyan City, met with Mr. Kantor at the Wudang Mountains Hotel. Other guests also attended the meeting, including Thomas McLain, Jack Chen, Zhang Huili, Deputy Mayor of Shiyan City, Li Faping, Secretary of Wudang Special Region, and Mr. Yang Qingshan, Chairman of Taichi Lake Group.
In December 2011, Taichi Lake Group, in partnership with LA-based Ikonic Entertainment Group, formally launched the “Taichi Legend” Wudang Taichi Cultural Tourism Zone. At the signing ceremony in Beijing, Secretary Zhou Ji and Mr. Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles, also signed a cooperation memorandum on cultural exchanges between the two cities. As a member of Mayor Villaraigosa’s official delegation, Mr. Kantor witnessed the signing ceremony.

Secretary Zhou Ji warmly greeted Mr. Kantor and other guests. Mr. Zhou said that Shiyan City is located in the valley of Qinba Moutain, which is an important ecological barrier of China, and that the Wudang Mountains are a World Cultural Heritage site and one of the birthplaces of Daoism and Wudang Kung Fu. He further stated that Shiyan City is nicknamed “Eastern Detroit” because of its prominence as an industrial powerhouse in industries such as automobile, hydropower, cultural tourism and bio-medical.

Mr. Kantor has been very supportive of the development of Shiyan City and Wudang Mountains. He believed that the Wudang Taichi cultural tourism zone would be very exciting and a promising and innovative development model. He believed that this project would be a great showcase platform for US-China economic and cultural cooperation.

Mr. Zhou said that the “Taichi Legend” Wudang cultural tourism zone would be a mixture of the Wudang Mountains’ cultural resources and Taichi Lake’s industrial development and would be an opportunity to mix traditional Eastern culture with Hollywood modern production. Mr. Zhou hoped that more visitors from the US would come to Shiyan City and the Wudang Mountains to explore tourism and other collaboration opportunities.
